Mexico Cartel CJNG Aftermath
Feb 22-23, 2026 • Multiple States, Mexico
More than 250 cartel-linked incidents were reported across at least 20 Mexican states following the confirmed death of Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) leader Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes during a federal security operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco.
The coordinated unrest included road blockades (narcobloqueos), vehicle and business arson, highway shutdowns, public transport suspensions, sporadic armed clashes with security forces, and temporary airport and flight disruptions. Jalisco experienced the highest concentration of activity, particularly across the Guadalajara metropolitan area and key transport corridors toward Puerto Vallarta and Michoacán . Authorities report that the majority of blockades were cleared within hours, with federal and state forces maintaining precautionary deployments.
The U.S. Embassy and other foreign governments issued shelter-in-place advisories across multiple states, and airlines temporarily suspended flights to Puerto Vallarta amid safety concerns . Mexican officials have stated that stability has largely been restored; however, localized and opportunistic incidents remain possible as enforcement operations continue and cartel succession dynamics unfold.
